A wedding on a budget needn’t be a cheap wedding!  The wedding of your dreams is meant to be a fairtale story, and one that you may have been planning in your head since you were five and played kiss chase at school.  But in reality the cost of a designer wedding dress, stunning venue, amazing cake and more can all add up.   The average wedding is now costing £21,000 according to research, which is no small sum, and doesn’t even include the honeymoon or rings.  To get to that average, some couples will have spent considerably more, and others considerably less.

Today, we are going to look at spending considerably less for those who are planning their wedding on a budget.  Indeed it is possible to hold a wedding for under £10,000 with some careful planning, useful resources and good friends and family.

Wedding on a Budget does not mean a Cheap Wedding!

1.  Set a budget and stick to it!

Download Weddings in Surrey Budget calculator which will ensure you don’t go overboard.  Simply type in your budget and as you spend on each item it will calculate the total spend and what you have left.  It’s hard to cheat!

2.  Venues – Get married in November.

A winter wedding is always going to be cheaper than in Summer, and booking a midweek day can mean that you get 50% off the high season price.   If you don’t need a year to plan your wedding opt for Late Availability where you can snag a top notch venue for less.

3.  Negogiate

Ask if there is any room for negotiation on wedding suppliers prices.  If it is a quiet time for them you may get a reduction.

4.  Friends and Family

Friends and family are often delighted to be asked to help.  If you wedding is more DIY, get them to pitch in with making the favours or table decorations. Even better if one is a make-up artist, hairdresser or photographer.

5.  DIY Wedding

Make your own wedding stationery and venue decorations.  Hobbycraft have everything you need and there is plenty of inspiration to be found on our Pinterest page.

6.  Go Digital

Use media to send invitations and receive responses.  This is a completely free and bang on trend way to manage your wedding.

7.  Bridalwear

There are plenty of bridal shops selling sample or once worn Bridalwear saving you loads of ££££££ for a designer wedding dress.  Swoon Wedding Gowns in Weybridge is the leading High Street retailer specialising in this area.

8.  Bridesmaids

Go High Street – especially when the post Xmas sales are on.  Check out the sales of Coast and Phase 8 who can stock brilliant bridesmaidy dresses at half price!

9.  Flowers

Choose flowers in season to reduce costs, or even better save jam jars, decorate with antique lace and bundle in posies of seasonal flowers.  The bridal bouquets can be re-used to decorate the top table – just stand them in some pre-placed vases.

10.  Favours

Favours can be very expensive and the very one thing that are left on the tables when the wedding is over – so in our opinion don’t go mad.  Some ideas (and one that definitely won’t be left on the table) is to buy a Lottery Ticket for each guest.  Have a Sweet Buffet and personalise the sweetie bag as place names.  The guests can simply pop over to the sweet buffet and fill their bags.

11.  Guests

The more guests you have the more expensive your wedding reception is going to be.  With the average venue charge at least £65/head you can see how fast the money is going to go when you invite everyone you know.  Do you really want to invite the neighbours of your parents, or the 3rd cousin twice removed, or have every child?   This is where you have to rein it in if you want to control the spend.  Invite family and close friends, or invite immediately family and friends.  Evening guests are usually quite happy with a welcome drink and a canape.

12.  Wedding Transport

Anyone got a posh, vintage Car or VW Camper Van?  The bride usually arrives last which means no-one sees it anyway.

13.  Wedding Entertainment

It can be expensive to hire professionals – do you know a student band looking for exposure?  Consider hiring a Sound System and plugging in your own personal play list from an Ipod.

14.  Food and Drink

If you are not tied into the wedding venue, do the food and drink yourself.  That doesn’t necessarily mean being tied to the kitchen sink the week before you wedding but look at alternative catering.  A Spit Lamb Roast is a perfect and affordable solution to serve large numbers of guests – washed down with local wine, beer or cider.  Butcherland Lamb Roasts in Sussex are very popular with weddings – a company steeped in family tradition they roast the lamb over a wood fire.  Hire a mobile cocktail bar – most guests do not mind if the bar is not free for the entire wedding.

 15.  Preloved

Check out auction sites such as Preloved for secondhand wedding and bridal items.  Once the wedding is over, couples find themselves laden with 50 or so glass tealight holders, tiaras, veils and so on.  A bargain can be found on preloved wedding goods that may not even have been used.
